DAY 8 – FRED CLAUS (2007)

fred-claus-9

Starring: Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Elizabeth Banks, Kevin Spacey, Kathy Bates, Rachel Weisz

Directed by: David Dobkin

Synopsis: Fred Claus, Santa’s bitter older brother, is forced to move to the new pole.

What happened to Vince Vaughn? Did he fall out of love with acting? Does he have a gambling problem and hence needs money at any opportunity? I can’t remember seeing him anything vaguely decent since Old School. He is just doesn’t seem to be bothered anymore.

Take Fred Claus as a case in point. It’s all very average compared with the films Vaughn made at the beginning of his career. Sure, it has a great cast, and an interesting concept but it stops there. I think the sad thing is, it’s just average. It’s not even terrible. And when you have a cast that includes Paul Giamatti, Kevin Spacey and Kathy Bates it really shouldn’t be average.

I admit to laughing a couple of times in this, and there is a great bit featuring some famous siblings that I shall not spoil, as that is the only high point of the film.

In summary, watch Fred Claus if:

  • You want to see Vince Vaughn being mediocre as usual
  • You’ve always wanted to see Paul Giamatti being Paul Giamatti whilst dressed as Santa
  • You find Elizabeth Banks dressed as an elf sexy.
  • You wondered what happened to Stephen Baldwin after the Usual Suspects

Overall, this average film gets an average rating of:

2.5 clappers
